My friend wanted me to ask - she's got a coldwater tank measuring 30" x 11" x 14", and in it she has one golden apple snail. She was wondering whether golden apple snails need a friend and whether she should get another. Are they best in pairs or more or will they mate and have loads of babie snails? (i don't know why i gave the measurements - i just did)

Apple snails are fine singly. I don't know exactly how this type of snail reproduces, other than it needs to lay its eggs out of water in a humid place, but I'd have thought you could put another into a tank of that size. They should, if I remember correctly, be quite a slow breeder. I only keep the one, and it hasn't laid any eggs, so I presume they need a pair to breed.

I wouldn't worry about them mating, I doubt they would In a coldwater tank anyway, they should really be kept in warmer water. Whenever I've seen them in coldwater tanks they have been very inactive.

You need a male and a female for them to breed, and as said, they lay eggs out of the water - big easily noticeable big clumps.

Personally I really don't think the snail cares if it's on it's own though :good:.
