ok soo... i was never a fish person, but i ended up adopting a tank with fish and i had then for almost 2 years, caring for them as instructed.. and they seemed pretty happy .... this week i noticed strange happenings going on in my tank.... did research today (too late) but this is what ive learned so far

1. my fish were gouramies 2 golden 2 paradise (i also have a sucker fish )

2. now i have baby fry

3. the male golden who was quite nice to the other 3 fish ( which im guessng were 2 female paradise and another male golden ) the new fatehr becsme agressive after the fry arrived

4 now i have one golden fish and tons of baby fry

5. i am sad for the loss of my other 3 fish ... (who even being a cat person .... i have grown quite attatched to )
i really wish i had known before what was happening and to separate them :(

6 ... now that i know 2 were paradise and 2 golden .. and im pretty sure the goldens were both males at the dorsal fins were the exact same ... im wondering if it is unusual for a golden and a paradise to breed ... and what on eath the babies will look like ...
i thought these fish were completly different species until today !

ive taken most of the fry that i could fnd (they are soooooo tiny (but free swimming ) out of the large tank and into a smaller tank... and paln to get them fry food tomorrow...

will the sucker fish be ok with my newly territorial golden ?

how long will his moodieness last... i mean if i decided in a bit to give him new tank mates will he kill them like he did my other 3 ?
( i dont think he is a particularly agressive one as they all got along for some time before the fry ... )

has anybody heard of these 2 breeding before?

what size tank should the fry be in ...

and any other suggestions would be welcome :)

thank you soo much !

i so wish i had found this site and bothered to research a little about my fish before all this happened !

update

i ougt something called tropical first bites " for the fry.. and they seem to like it
they are getting larger now and are now about the size of a sesame seed :)

i have no idea if they will cross breed, but the male will get very aggressive and defend the nest till the death. I have a paradise right now that is building a bubble nest and trying to coax some eggs out of the female.

I don't believe they can breed (maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so).

Gold Gouramis are Trichogaster trichopterus and paradise [fish/gouramis] are Macropodus opercularis, leading my to believe that they're quite different beasts.

I'm thinking that what you think are paradise fish are probably some form of blue/opaline gourami, which is what the gold gourami really is.

This is really bizarre. Two entirely different species shouldn't be breeding. Maybe your golds aren't both males. If you could post pics of YOUR fish we could check for you.

Was there a bubble nest? Thats how these fish breed.

Are there no other fish in the tank that could be responsible? No livebearers per chance?

there were no other fish in the tank besides on of those lil catfish that sticks to the walls...

and yes he made a bubble nest.. actually he made one again today .. it was a lil sad because hes all alone now

i will post pictures onece they start to develop distinct features... right now they are very small and kinda clear looking they seem healthy :)
