Hello, I am new here.
I have a 75 gal freshwater aquarium. The aquarium is the home of my 2 gold severums along with a couple other fish.
This past weekend I heard alot of splashing. I look over and there the two goldies are tumbling around eachother. I did not manage to get the first part of the fight (or whatever it is) but I did get the second round.
Please watch this video and help me understand what and why they are doing this.
One other thing. This is the second time I have caught them doing this. Both time were within a few hours of a large water change.

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to better understanding this behavior.

I must first ask you to excuse the music. My boyfriend helped me make the video and it was his pick as I did not know how to get a song off of my itunes.

if theyre male and a female lip locking is often breeding behaviour but to me those look like 2 males so id say they are fighting/establishing diminance either that or they are gay

Yeah maybe they are just gay... LMAO. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
So how can you tell that they look as though they are both males?
Should I think about seperating them and finding one of them a new home?

I am just confused that I only have have noticed this behavior after a water change.

in males the anal fin usually extends to and een past the caudal fin (tail) maybe not the case but from watching the video both fish seemed to. the tip of the dorsal fin is extended too leading me to think both are male. maybe its just camera angles making it look this way.

as for seperating them theres arguements for and against really i mean if they are not doing it all the time and not actually hurting each other no real harm is being done altho having said that if it is 2 males competing then both fish may be happier with there own tank. how long has this behaviour been going on?

This is the second time since I have had them for (a year in May/June) that I have caught this behavior. They were very small when I purchased them.
Thank you for your help..

They are definitely male. This is a fight for territory. Are there other female cichlids in the tank? I have a 90 gallon tank with seven large severum males (golds. turquoise, reds) with no fights. The key is that I have no females. Unfortunately this makes breeding very hard but their colors are fantastic.
