Hi,

My question is, How can you feed a pleco if all the gold fish attack the algae wafers before the pleco can get it? The gold fish go wild over the algae wafers. I was wondering if there is a way to feed the pleco seperately or trick the gold fish so the pleco can get the algae wafer? I have tried puting the algae wafer under a log where he stays, but the gold fish seem to find it before he gets a chance to eat it. I do not want tos tarve the poor thing, because my youngest daughter has taken up to it so much. ANy suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Email me at suzcoymeme@yahoo.com for any answers.

I don't believe plecos and goldfish are suppose to live together. Goldfish need colder water than the pleco.

I know this, but our pleco was bought from the pet store and he was in the same water. we have a heater in the fish tank that stays below or right at 70 degrees. I just need info on how to feed the pleco, because he seems to be doing fine. we have had him for a almost a month now and seems to be doing fine. every things seems to be fine other than just being able to get him to eat before the gold fish get all of his food. Like I have mentioned, I would hate for the little guy to starve, because my youngest daughter has gotten attached to it. (She looks for him every morning) I do know that he does not like the light, He comes out at night more than he would during the day. I thought that I could feed him at night, but the gold fish go wild every time you drop a algae wafer into the cage.

Try to distract the goldfish while feeding the pleco. Feed them their food so they are busy eating and then drop in the wafer.

thanks for the tip, but the gold fish still get the algae wafers before the pleco gets it. any more suggestions please list, anything will be appreciated. thanks

I don't know how big the plec is in relation to the goldfish, is it is smaller you might be able to put the wafer in a smallish container and set it on the bottom of the tank, then the plec should smell it out and go in to eat it, while keeping the goldfish out.

You said you've fed at night but the goldfish see it, did you turn off all the lights and then throw it in? Plecs use their nose much more than their eyes.

Also, what kind of goldfish and plec do you have, and how big is your tank?

I have common gold fish, Not too big, we have one gold fish who is bait size, but other than that, they are only a few inches long. Our tank is a 10 gallon tank. I ahve fed the fish at night, fed gold fish, then set the algae wafer under the log so the pleco can eat, but the gold fish end up finding it. Is there a way to block the gold fish from finding the algae wafer so teh pleco can eat?

Um, is this a temporary setup? If not I'm afraid you may have to rehome your fish. Common goldfish can get almost two feet long and should not be kept in a tank at all, and depending on what type of pleco you have it also may get over a foot long. Right now your tank is massively overstocked and will be hurting all your fish, including the plec, far more than just not getting food.

Goldfish can get to 12" in length and plecos 24" if it is a common pleco. Feed the pleco at night when they are more active.

How would you feed the pleco at night if the gold fish find the food? What types of food can you feed the pleco and gold fish?
