I have been having some issues with algae and other unknowns growing in my tank. Also i have a concern with my piece of drift wood that came from a potentially very dirty lake. I am planning to tank out the drift wood and add a few more rocks and a nice piece of bog wood bought from my LFS. Will this much change and activity stress out the fish? I am not planning to remove them from the tank while i work. I am also planning on adding a bit more gravel. Should I be taking any steps to clean the gravel to avoid introducing any type of harmful bacteria? (This is gravel that has been sitting around in the garage for some time)

any help is great, thank you.

I would be wary of putting rocks into the tank as some can change the ph, are there any particular types of rocks you want?
Changing/adding the gravel should not cause the tank to mini-cycle as the bulk of the beneficial bacteria are located in your filter, although i would advise washing the gravel thoroughly before hand as new gravel can be dirty/dusty and make the tank cloud up if not washed properly  .

As to the algae problem, do you know what type of algae you have? How long do you leave the tank lights on per day and is the tank near a natural sourse of light like a window? Do you have any live healthy plants?

The rocks will be granite

i have three types of algae. I made a thread with pictures in the plant section. no natural source of light is near and i have 15 live plants, the algae seem to have slowed their growth though. 2x40watt fluro bulbs. 1.23 wpg. i do not add any nutrients or anything.

I am more concerned wether or not moving all this stuff around will stress the fish because I don't want to change everything if its going to stress them to the point of sickness

i have rearranged my tank before-it is stressfull for the fish. just try to minimise the stress do everything slowly and carefully, also consider turning off the tanks lights while you do it.

right on thanks. I am going to do it within the hour. all i am going to do is take out the drift wood and rocks and give them a good clean add some more gravel, trim the plants then put everything back in. I was going to add some more rocks and replace the drift wood with some bogwood from my LFS but i have no car today to get all that done, so this will do.

**EDIT

Just finished adding the new gravel and cleaning the tank quite a bit. looks great and much cleaner. Maybe once i get some bogwood i will remove this piece of driftwood i have. the fish seemed a little skitterish when i started but after a few minutes they chilled in one corner. anwyays thanks to both of u. :)

Is there only me then who has nosy fish who will swim as close as possible to see what I'm doing in the tank? I actually have to shoo some of them away!
