I have finally picked out which plants and extras I want. If I go Eco-complete or similar will I have to break down the tank or can I just place it in carefully without disturbing the fish too much or should I just go with the fert-tabs instead?

I scoop out the old substrate with a fish net and carefully add the new substrate using a clean, brand new disposable type plastic cup. Just gently pour it in. Doesn't seem to bother the fish all that much.

Thanx Boxermom;
All the info i've read starts from an empty tank or people breaking down the tank and starting this way. I'd rather not move the fish since a number of the girls are heavily pregnant and while they don't mind my arm in the tank ( they nibble at it), they freak out with the net and I don't want to stress them into abortng the fry. Hopefully this will be easier on them

what i did was i cleaned the substrate (flourite) and poured it into my tank, then siphoned, while siphoning i was cleaning the tank and mixing the 2 substrates.

also make sure they are pregnant and not going through dropsy , ive thought some of my fish wee pregnant cause they were real fat, when infact they had dropsy or bladder problem

No definately pregnant. Large gravid spot. Squaring off except one which is just starting to show her gravid spot (she's orange and the fry's eyes are now becoming visible and she's starting to square off.
