Going On Holiday Soon- Very Strange Noise Coming From Filter!

Okay, in my 15 gallon I have an AquaVital AVI600 internal filter which I've had for a couple of months. In the past month or so I've been abruptly awoken in the night by a very unusual high-pitched, squealing-like revving sound from the filter. Sometimes, it does so for a few seconds, others I've had to get up and unplug it to stop it. It's a really awful unusual noise. Today, it was making a similar noise it short, lower-pitched 'revs' which sounded like an old car starting and stopping if you know whatta' mean. I've given the sponges a clean and tried to clean the inside of the unit as much as I can through the intake. It tends to stop when it's been off for a few hours then starts a day later.

Anybody know what this and how I can stop it, I'm going on holiday, and my mum is looking after my tanks so she will get impatient if she keeps getting woken up and she'll leave it off all the time and kill my fishies!

what's the impellor? the little propeller thing inside it?

Yes I know, but I tried what you said and it didn't work and I need it fixing before I go on holiday and I'm hoping somebody else might be able to suggest something else..

take the filter apart and remove the impellor, this will be held in by a magnet and its the plastic thing with blades on it. give it a good clean and give the housing a good clean where it came from. generally clean the whole filter, take it all apart and do it thorough.

Lol, oh dear. I've had an internal do that and it was due to the water not being ablle to pass through the sponges efficiently. Clean them in removed tank water and the problem should go away. Check the impellor too if you haven't already and check no plant debris is getting into the intake of your filter because that will clog it and lead to the same noise.

Thanks everyone, will give the sponges a clean like Miss Dib Dabs said and as both walkers101 and mattlee said I will check the impellor inside because a lot of plant debris does go into the filter.
