Hey all. I'm getting a 24 gallon tank for my apisto soon, and I'm going to be using sand. I have never used sand before, and so I was wondering if anyone had any useful tips for this new and exciting adventure. lol.

Thanks! :D

rinse, rinse, rinse some more. repeat several times. I was overeager and didn't rinse it too thoroughly and it took over a week to clear and settle. i never have had much patience.

also, when you're adding water put a large plate on top of the sand and pour/syphon onto the plate. It stops a lot of sand getting kicked up.

Ditto the rinsing. But I had a full tank andadded the sand by cupfuls and smoothed it. There was very little sand kickback.

All right, thanks guys. :) My cories are gonna love it, so that'll be a bonus.

Well, just put some sand in what was a barebottom tank with some corries and a betta. Hopefully they like it. I know I do. :D

Here's a quick pic of how it looks in the 10 gallon I mentioned above. Water is still murky:

It was a thin layer. I just wanted to see how it looked. I added more, so now I think there's about .5" in there. I had a question that I haven't been able to find an answer for: How often should I run my fingers through the sand to discourage anaerobic pockets from forming? Thanks.

been researching doing this myself, seems general opinion is at the depth you have you dont need to worry about anerobic pockets, that may becom a concern when the depth is above 2"
