My hi fin red banded goby died in QT last night and i found him stuck to the PH intake

I tested water this last night and this morning they were:

SG:1.025
pH: 8.1
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 0
Temp: 76F (this is a little low and it was 78 when I went to sleep, but over an 8 hour period, a 2F drop shouldn't be life threatening)

He wasn't eating anything, i fed mysis, enriched brine shrimp, cyclopeeze but i never saw him eat. I got him on tuesday.

Probable cause of death anyone?

I got him from liveaquaria.com and am going to try to get a refund or replacement. I don't know what to do... my fish die in QT, i am going to just start putting them in the DT.

Really sorry about that!!!... my pregnant guppy died yesterday its horrible, defo try and get something done about getting refund or sumit, if not name and shame lol :)

I sent an email to liveaquaria's customer service.

They have a 14 day livestock policy and seeing as it died in 2 days, they should refund it or at least give me a credit.

I still am going to put the new one directly in the DT, since I seem to have horrible luck with QTing fishies.

just an update.

Liveaquaria emailed me back (3 hours after I emailed them, i'm really impressed!) and gave me a credit of $16.99 (the price of the goby) unfortunately I lose out on shipping costs, but i did get my fighting conch in that order too.

I have decided to only buy fish locally and corals online since they're cheaper!

Another tip, always test the transport water for SG - if you don't how do you know how long to acclimatise for? Unfortunatley many lfs use a low sg to avoid illness such as ich but then that means a very long acclimatisation is required. I now take my refractometer along with me to buy fish and test the water before deciding to buy - I don't buy from anyone who sells fish in an sg of less than 1.025

that's a good buying policy. When acclimatizing fish i always test temp/sg/pH when starting and before putting them in.

If sg/pH are the same as my tank, i just float the bag, if not, i drip until they are the same.

I always drip no matter if sg is the same or not. There are going to be other parameters that are different.

What do you have in your qt tank as far as hardware?

what other params could effect them besides pH/temp/SG?

I have an external filter with filter floss and LR rubble (already cycled in main tank) and a piece of LR (also fully cured from MT) a maxijet 900 pointed at the surface. I put some sand in for the goby to hide in too. Also, a heater to keep the temp constant.

Basically enough equipment to run a full FOWLR tank.

I now only buy my fish from one place, I know that their water is run at a consistent 1.026 and that there are no nasties in the water - I know because I tested their water once every couple of weeks over a period of months when I was adding my live stock (by the way they know I was testing). They will also keep any fish that I order for two or more weeks to ensure that the fish is not carrying anything harmful.

And that shop is: Pets At Home, Southend branch, managed by Mark (a legend) and with a good team around him, but in particular Jeff, they get five stars all the way (apart from the coral section - too expensive!!!)

yah, i think i am only going to buy from hidden reef from now on. I've never seen a dead fish or ich in one of their tanks. Also haven't lost a fish i bought from there yet. I should ask if they will hold for a couple of weeks for me too.
