Hey there, I've had my betta, Bruce, for a few weeks now, my other half went out to get lizard food yesterday (we have a breeding pair of bearded dragons) and came back with a present - 5 glowlight tetras. I was quite happy to keep Bruce all by himself but nvm! Just wondered if they will be ok? It's only a small tank, I was thinking of getting a few shrimp but I dont think I will now, it's only a 23L and I dont want to overcrowd it.

So far Bruce has flared at a couple (but only when one seems to drift from the group, think he's a bit of a wimp really lol), but I have seen one of the tetras nip him. They seem to be staying out of eachother's way atm, with Bruce staying close to the surface most of the time, and the glowlights hovering around the stones. Were they just sizing eachother up do you think? Will they leave eachother alone now?

i wouldnt if they are starting to nip him, Also glowlights can get to a go 1.5 inch in size and the tank is too small for all the fish together.

Oh no :( So what should I do? I cant afford another tank for them. Is there anything I can put in there to make it better for him?

Why do people tell you it's ok grrr  My boyf said he asked the bloke, told him the size of the tank and everything, and he reckons they'll be fine. This has really got on my nerves, they're supposed to have a really good reputation as well!

even fish that have a good reputation these can still be nippy. I suppose its like humans you get nice ones you get nasty ones  I would take the glowlights back and get a refund or exchange for plants or something. I only recommend tank mates if the tank is above 30L and then your limited to what you can have anyway.

I meant the fish shop was supposed to have a good reputation lol but thanks :p

I will see if I can get down there. Pain in the bum coz I dont drive! I will tell fishies off and hope they behave themselves till then

For tankmates you could fit 4 endler males in there with your betta although again this can be iffy so you need to keep a very close eye. You can have loads of inverts in their with him though if you want to make it more interesting. I have a 25L (with extremely excessive filtration mind) it contains 20 cherry shrimp, Cherry shrimp juveniles (normally get eaten quite rapidly but a couple have survived the last batch) 2 endler males, 3 guppy females, guppy/endler hybrid fry (normally get eaten within a week), 10 tiger shrimp, 3 amano shrimp, 3 assassin snails, then the "pest" (I actually added mine as I like them but its anyones guess on the number) snail front; ramshorns, pond snails and malaysian trumpet snails. My filter is huge though as I built it myself so I can keep this much in such a small tank, still having spot on chemical levels (ammonia, nitrate etc.) and I will move the guppies at some point to actually raise the fry.

If you call up the fish shop today and give them some notice then you can know for sure if they will accept them back. Any store in the UK can have items returned within the first week must accept the item back provided a valid reason is given.

ive been told that i can have 10 glowlights with a betta. afta reading this im not sure whether too. ive got a 60L and the current stocking is:
3 corys
5 glowlights

wanted stocking:
6 corys
10 glowlights
1 male betta

does anyone think that this is a good or bad idea??

When I first started the fish hobby I had a 20G tank with 10 Glowlights and 1 male betta.

My betta would constantly swim down from the top of the tank and flare at them. Thinking nothing of it I left them there. Every day I came down and there would be a dead tetra until there was only 4 left. I took my betta out and put him in a smaller tank and no more tetras died.

I personally will not keep a betta with any tetras but i suppose it all depends on the personality of the fish....whether it is aggressive or pasive?
