I have a small clump of Glosso, which I would like to try growing as a small carpet area, for the first time. I have seen some people with this growing under a net on rocks etc. and wondered if someone could give me some tips on successful growth.

My tank is a juwel vision 260, so its quite deep. It still has the original bulbs (3 months old) with reflectors, so I worked out that would be about 2.2wpg. I've also got a Nutrafin CO2 container in use. I'm a bit concerned I might not have enough light, with the depth of the tank. Substrate is sand.

Any advice most welcome.

I think you may have Glosso and Riccia confused. Glosso is a small leaved carpeting plant, Riccia is originally a floating plant that can adapt to submerged life - it has no leaves as such, just a mass green "roots".

Glosso is more demanding - you'll need 3 WPG minumum with 30ppm CO2 I would say for best results. Riccia is less fussy.

Hiya

The lamps that come standard with juwel tanks arnt really suitable for growing plants particularily a plant like glosso, Glosso needs a lot of light and it also needs a nutrient rich substrate in order for it to work for you, if glosso doesnt get enough light it will grow upwards towards the light, if it has the correct lighting and substrate it will grow compact and form a carpet eventually, its not a particularily hard plant to grow, but it does require a lot of light (i would say 3WPG and upwards) also your tank is quite deep and this may cause problems in itself.

Sorry

Hmm - I think I may have a problem with the depth of the tank then. I do use pellet substrate fertilisers, as well as liquid, so me roots get done, as it were. :hey: I have thought about changing the bulbs , but have'nt done so yet, as my other juwel tanks do well as they are, but with low light plants. Don't get me wrong, I will try it and see how it gets on, but I am not aiming for the effect of the beautiful designed tanks that you guys have - don't have the patience or dedication for that :p I'm more of a "back to nature, let it get on with it by itself" kinda gal ;)

Is there any type of bulb you could particularly recommend? And I take it I just plant this one into the substrate?

Cheers

Have a look at gf225s pinned article on lighting at the top of this section, he gives a good few good choices of tubes that will be suitable for growing plants, just keep in mind the colour variation that these tubes will give to the overall look of your tank when chooseing, some people dont like a to warm or cool a look for viewing, but they will all grow plants, a good idea maybe is to mix a warm and a cool lamp and this will be good for growing plants but also nice to look at, or if you go for a lamp that has a greenish tinge to it this will bring out the intensity of the green in plants.

Choices, choices........good luck with it

I think you were right when you said I had got glosso and riccia mixed up - anyway it is glosso that I actually have. I am an idiot! :*)

Thanks everyone for your advice - I will have a look at the articles suggested. Cheers. :)
