Okay, I did a search on ghost shrimp on this forum. From what I've read, it seems most glass shrimp are freshwater, and some can be brackish. But, at my LFS, the glass shrimp are in a salt water tank. The owner said they are salt water fish, but are fed to fresh water fish.

So, I bought 6 for a dollar, fed 5 to the fish in my 29 gallon, and put one in my 10 gallon freshwater (which was cycling). It seemed to survive fine for two hours, then I took it out and fed it to my parrot and convicts.

So heres my questions. Is this a particular type of glass shrimp that are saltwater? Because they look identical to the glass shrimp that I saw on the site which said they were freshwater. If they are, could they survive in freshwater? If they couldn't survive in freshwater, could I add aquarium salt to my 10 gallon, without having to buy a skimmer or extra salt water equipment?

And, finally, I bet they are brackish. Do you need saltwater equipment for a brackish aquarium? Or could I just use filter, heater, and cover?

Thanks.

Or did I just screw up, and all along I've been talking about GHOST shrimp being brackish and freshwater...oh boy. Someone please answer me. :dunno:

AFAIK, Glass Shrimp are Ghost Shrimp, which is in actuality, several species of transparent shrimp ranging from Fresh to Brackish water conditions. I've never heard of Ghosts in Saltwater, except to feed fish. Then again there may be a type of Ghost Shrimp that is a Saltwater species. No way to know for sure though. It's annoying how so many creatures have the same name.
