If you just want it for say the back of the tank, I use normal emulsion, 2 or 3 coates to the outside of the tank works fine and you can scrape it off relatively easily if you get fed up of it.

The problem with those is they're not really high-quality paints. Even with a few coats, they still look opaque and kind of crappy. I babysit a girl down the street and she has those, but they always seem to end up looking gross. Plus, they're so easy to remove that even a little scratch will peel most of it off. Then you'd have to reapply it and such.
What about Saran Wrap? You know, that stuff you use to cover foods and such? That may work. You can get it in different colors. I've never tried it, but it may work.
