Can you provide the scientific name, so we know exactly which species?

Common names are frequently misleading because they may only be "common" to the person using them, or to that country or area.  The scientific name is absolute to all.

Byron.

Agree with Byron!

There are a few species known as 'glass fish', some of which have quite specific requirements :)

I think hes speaking of the glass catfish or Kryptopterus vitreolus, these are commonly sold at petsmart, although idk if south africa has petsmarts so the common glass fish there may be something totally different, id love to go over there and get a few african fish there, people eat fish over there that are worth hundreds of dollars over here lol

If this is the fish then here is some info on them.

They get about 2 inches and do school best in groups of 6+, but i would definitely get as many as possible because this species is very shy and timid.

They are a peaceful species and can be kept with those other schooling fish.

A 20 gallon long would be ok but i would go for larger with lots of decoration so they feel safe and secure.

Or maybe he's asking about the late Chanda ranga :D
Those poor fish are dyed and sold in bulk here to the point that they're sold in cups like bettas are :(

Many of the 'glass catfish' get to a lot bigger than 2" :/

But in regards to this i did mention the exact fish Kryptopterus vitreolus that only reaches 2-3" and maybe 4 if your really lucky.

I was thinking of Kryptopterus bicirrhis, which is the only 'glass catfish' I've ever seen in LFS in the UK. According to Seriously Fish, they can reach 15 cms/6", although 10 cms/4" would be more usual.

im talking about the see through ones

There are two main types of 'see through' ones though

They need very different conditions, so we need to know which one you're talking about, which is why we keep asking

Are you talking about;

the Indian glass fish, Parabassis ranga (formerly Chandra ranga);glass-fish.jpg

Or the glass catfish, Kryptopterus sp.; glass-catfish.jpg

??

yes, we need to know which clear fish you are reffering too please.

And yes im sure many species are available to you :D in america we have to import the African fish and pretty much all the fish we sell today because american fish are usually cold water species.

Some of the fish i really like that are imported from SA and Africa are arowana, polypterus, many species of catfish and puffer fish, geophagus, and large pleco species.

Turns out the ones we have here are P.siamensis and not P.ranga after all :-/

Anyways, good luck and keep us posted! :)
