i'm looking to buy a used aquarium from this guy and the tank he wants to sell me has a glass cover. i have never seen one of these before, what do you guys think? better than a whole plastic top with hinge deal? and how do you feed the fish???? thanks so much!

Im not to sure what you mean, but i though all tanks have glass lids didnt they? there split into four so you can open them and feed the fish.

no i haven't really seen it, only a picture of the aquarium as a whole but i couldn't really tell anything about the glass cover. could you tell me anything about them?

Aquariums sometimes have glass plates which slide along runners and overlap each other rather than plastic or metal hoods. They are good for reducing evaporation but IMO don't look as good as a hood. Usually the lights are mounted above the glass plates which will reduce the amount of light getting into the tank which is another drawback.
My 56g came with glass plates but i'm building a hood instead, it's not hard :)

I thought with a glass top you could have more lighting options than with a regular hood (if I'm understanding the post right). I had a hood and went out and got a glass top/hood so I could put two separate light strips on it (already had the strips laying around)

Correct as most pre-formed hoods have only 1 or 2 spaces for tubes whereas with a glass top you have the whole tanktop to put lights on :)
As mentioned though you need more light as it has to penetrate the glass as well as the water.

Oh, and you need to keep the glass clean :X

Basically most "standard" glass tops are just like plastic ones, only glass. They are hinged in the middle to allow easy feeding of fish. The light either sits right on the glass or can be mounted higher. IMO glass is far better than plastic in terms of allowing light to pass through into the tank. All my tanks have glass covers, I I think it looks "cleaner" and my tanks all look brighter than when they had plastic covers.

Why can't you use glass covers -and- a hood?! Its by far the best option for most purposes. The glass plates and the runners sit on the lip of the tank and the hood fits on top. best of both worlds.
