Mine are about 4 inches give or take and I have 6 of them which IMO is the bare minimum. They really need to be in a school. Don't expect to see them too much if you have a bright, planted tank or rocks/ornaments for them to hide behind. They will come out more in dawn or moonlight and/or if you have plants floating on the surface. They do not like bright light at all. This is why they seem timid. Actually they are not timid at all and are very confident in the tank around other fish and will explore all areas of the tank as long as the light isn't bright. If you really want to enjoy them in their full glory, get some moonlights and dim LED's and use those lights first thing in the morning and at night after you turn the main tank lights off and watch them in action! Totally fascinating fish, I love them! They also need perfect water stats because they are very prone to bacterial afflictions.
Just did the litres to gallons conversion. Your tank is about 25 gallons which IMO is too small for these guys.
