so i saw some neat glass catfish and think they would go great with my ghost shrimp. but has anyone tried them with bettas? also lighting and gravel what would be some good choices.
Glass catfish can grow up to 6" (depending on what type) and prefer to be in groups. We have five and they are fascinating fish. They prefer lower levels of light but are have got used to being out and about with the lights on. They are very peaceful and investigate other fish with their 'feelers' but never seem aggressive. Ours are kept with dwarf gourami, male guppies, tetras, Cory doras and plecs with no problem in our 300L tank. The only difficulty I could forsee is tank size as glass cats potentially will grow quite large and are quite active when feeding so to have a group in which they would be comfortable would require more room than is in the usual sized betta tank. (Our bettas live in individual tanks between 28L and 60L)
I have kept white cloud mountain minnows with one of my bettas who is a very laid back boy with no problems, also African dwarf frogs these seem to make good betta tank mates.
As for lighting ours are in a tank with the standard light fittings and we have a sand substrate but as the glass catfish are mid/top swimmers I don't think they would mind gravel as they would not come into contact with it.
