My glass catfish is all alone with my guppies in my 10 gallon tank. He seemed happy for about 5 months until he started spinning and swimming wildly about a week ago. I couldn't figure out what the problem was because the water chemistry is fine and he doesn't have any damages or discoloration on him. I assume it is stress due to being alone. I was going to buy some glass catfish buddies for him today but this morning I found him on the aquarium floor. He isn't moving his body but he's still breathing.
Since I assume there is nothing that can save him now I was wondering what the most humane way to kill a fish was? Should I take the risk and add some fish?

How often do you do water changes?
Do you see any red below his gill plates?
Do you have darker spots in the tank for him to hide in?

As they are a schooling fish he probably is unhappy however I would not suggest adding more to the current 10gallon as they have the possiblity of getting up to 6inches. So unless you can add him into a bigger tank and buy of his friends that would be the best thing to try.

I realized that I hadn't done a thorough cleaning of the gravel for quite some time. So I cleaned the gravel out yesterday and changed about 50% of the water. He's still spinning though.
Would a 20 gallon be big enough for 3 glass cats? I noticed that he does have red under his gills. What does that mean?

its sad to say but in the worst case and you do need to put your fish out of its pin the "Best" / most humane way is to either have some water that is ice cold / been in the fridge a few days or boil a kettle put the water in a cup then put the fish in the cup, the extreme heat change will paralyse the fish and all body functions will cease you may get one las fin kick but then nothing, not a nice thing to watch but u can look away. there are of course other methods but this seemed to be the best way i could find when one of my rams were past the point i could help him.
