Giving Birth Now!

Hay Guys,


My Platy is giving birth now, she has just had one then ate it

She seems to be taking AGES to have them , I can see the Fin of one now but has been like this for a while!!!



What should I/shouldn't I do!!!

The best thing you can do is leave her. She will give birth over many hours and even days..some things can't be rushed Unfortunatly as soon as they are born mummy doesn't understand they are her children and they become a tasty snack. You always lose some but a couple survive and then the whole process starts again

Put her in a breeding trap if you have one. She might postpone her birth until a later time as its a bit stressful, but generally if she's in labour, she would have them within 24 hours.

Some time ago my cousin could never breed platys successfully so he gave me a heavly pregnant platy and i put it in my breeding trap. we lived next door so made sure the water temperatures were exact and then he got a net and legged it over to mine which really isnt recommended (he now works in maidenhead aquatics lol). This fish bred that night and then i let it recover and sent it back over to his the propper way. The point i'm trying to make is that even if you do put the fish through a bit of stress by putting her in the breeding trap, it wont really effect her in terms of a mis-caridge.

If you havnt got a breeding trap, i propose you buy the biggest breading trap you can find as female platys are quite big compared to guppys so they should have a big breeding trap.

I also like the 5 in ones as you can do a multiple of things at one time as its big enough. I once had:
1 swordtail, 1 guppy, loads of fry and a very harsly bitten male guppy all in seperate compartments so it will be a good investment if you bought it.

lol...Good sales pitch lol...I have a breeding trap but didn't know where it was, in the end she had 40+ Fry
Some were eaten, some were dead (4) and the rest are now in my Fry tank!!!

YAY I'V SO MANY FRY
