My female bettas gills have been getting redder and redder, at first I just thought that they were beinging irritated by an ammonia spike that I recently endured due to poor advice (the levels are almost back to normal now). But all the of the other fish have normal gills. The coloring around her gills has changed too, its yellowish, and shes naturally a very light pink in color and they appear to be bleeding slightly. I'm currently treating my tank for tail/fin rot with maracyn and maracyn 2. Should I just keep her in the tank and continue treating her in there? She's active, eating and not gasping for air, so I'm not sure what it is. Please help!! I'm going to the pet shop today to check out the new shipment of fish, so any meds u suggest i can pick up! Thanks

Any signs of laboured breathing or trying to rub the gills on things in the tank. Also the yellowish gills do they look like a tarnish, any excessive mucas on them.

no there isn't any excess mucus that i can see, her breathing and appetite are fine she keeps rubbing her nose/mouth on the front glass but not the sides. also the coloring is like a yellow brown in color and it actually continues partway down her body

here are some pics so you can see

Thats bad it sounds like a parasite, could be velvet or gill flukes i would get a med to cover both, good luck.

i couldn't find any at the petstore today. they only had meds for ick. i was told to put non iodized salt into the water to kill the parasites will this work?

No, you cannot use salt in your tank, as you have cories in there, who cannot tollerate salt. Look to see if they have a med called Copper Safe. I have used this before and was pleased with the resultes (it also treats ich)

the cories are in a different tank i moved them before the whole epidemic occured, i wish the store sold coppersafe they don't. but all of the other fish in my tank can take it right? my sig was changed to what my tanks will be once i get everything situated. i want to seperate my swordtails from my platies because all of my platties are female at this point and i don't want to hybridize especially w/ a platy female and swordtail male. so w/ the cories out can i do the salt thing?

i'm horrible at giving info lol, the pleco has scales on it and the algae eater is in w/ the cories and pleco anyway lol ok but anyways i'm going to see if there is another pet shop around and if they carry coppersafe

Ok, you can safely add salt to that tank. You should definately visit another LPS and try to find a parasite med, that will be your best bet.
i can find parasite meds but they either say that it is just for ick or "other parasites" what are the other ones? some give weird sientific names of them that i don't know what they are. and others say for paramecium or whatever that shape is that looks like an oval medicine capsule (i.e. triple sulfa capsules). the nearest lps that i know of besides the one i go to is like 45 min away and i live on campus and don't have a car at the campus. i can't afford to pay for a taxi ride that far

what are the active ingredients? You can also order some meds by mail, however, since his gills are bleeding, i would want to get them in there ASAP
i don't really remember, if you gave me a list of the active ingredeients that would work, i'll bring the list to the store and see if those meds have what i need
