Ive been looking into Ghost shrimp and just wanted to see others advice on them. Any Advice? can I feed them Algae wafers? do they like a little salt in their water?

From experience 'ghost shrimp' eat pretty much anything you feed them (within limits..obviously!!)I feed them algae pellets, but they're not the smartest animals so often the fish pick up on them before the shrimp even realise they're there! But occasionally they'll get one...and that's pretty much all they need. They'll eat normal fish flakes too but the fish get them too quick!

If you get a group of them it should help make them less timid...but in nature they're preyed on by anything big enough to eat them so they'll always want to hide in the shade or plants or whatever.Often when the lights go out i see mine swimming about..which looks quite amusing,

Just so you know they shed their skin. So if you see this don’t panic it’s normal and they usually eat it after, yuck. But they are not picky with the food and will eat just about anything. They prefer to be kept in groups and they don’t get very big. I really like ghost shrimp.

Oh no, ghost shrimp are harmless. They won’t hurt your other fish.

I bought a male swordtail that killed my two ghost shrimp. My guppies, mollies and platys never bothered them. Bought ONE swordtail to cut down my snail population (which worked great) and it pecked the ghost shrimp to pieces.

I ended up with a ghost shrimp when I bought some Amano's . I haven't been able to get hold of any more since then, but despite that he seems perfectly at ease by himself. None of my fish pick on him, and he does a great job of cleaning up the substrate along with my loach and cories. As others have said they really will eat pretty much anything in terms of dry foods. I haven't seen mine eat any live foods other than a few bloodworm.

I think he's a real character, he isn't remotely shy and will happily take dried tubifex worms from the cube if I hold it in there with the planting stick. I am tempted to see if he will feed from my hands :D He swims out at feeding time and propells himself about grabbing food left right and centre! I like to watch the food go into his stomach where I see it churning around :p

I think they're great little things, and they won't harm your fish at all. I do know that some fish medicaments are very harmful to invertebrates like shrimps, so you have to be careful what you put in there in you have a case of illness and don't have a hospital tank.

Go for it!

what pH does the water have to be? mIne is about 6.3-6.5. And the temp of the water is between 82-84 degrees F.
