Can someone tell me about ghost shrimp?

I hear they are good cleaners, and someone mentioned in another post that they can go with bettas.

How big do they get? Do they need to be in groups? Are there any special feeding considerations? What is the min. tank size required? And any other info you might consider useful.

Thanks!

hmm i have some ghost shrimp.. i thin theyt recommend 4 or more together. i onl have one currently it does fine and keeps my tank spotless. they dont get all that big.. the male will get up to about 3 inches and female about 2 inches is what ive read... and thier each to breed.lol... as for the tank size.. mine are ina 5 gallon.. lol...

They do well in warmer temperatures, though they can survive in waters that are as cold as the upper 50 degree Fahrenheit range. It has been observed that in very warm temperatures, Ghost Shrimp become much more active, and they have been reported to become so aggressive as to attack fish in warm temperatures.

Ghost shrimp are good scavengers. They will clean up excess food but won't eat algae. They will grow to about 2 or 3 inches and live up to 2 or 3 years. They don't add much to the bio-load so adding a couple to a tanks really doesn't affect the stocking level. As for putting them with bettas, it's hard to say. Bettas have different traits and some may leave the shrimp alone while other may kill them. If you have plenty of hiding places, they will probably be ok. You will definitely need a place for them to hide when they molt.

Just a warning: my betta ate a ghost shrimp once. :( I've never had any luck with ghost shrimp. They always wind up dying. They're cool to watch, though.

Thanks guys! That link was great, my husband will like that they're pretty see-through

I think that I won't put one in with my betta, he started out pretty placid, but he's gotten more agressive lately. I'll wait til I can get another tank... and my husband isn't so thrilled with that thought, so who knows when that will be ^_^

Thanks again!
