Hi all, iv been reading around the plants section and iv heard of ppl saying how's ur Gh level, hows your Kh level and even though im starting out my plantd tank and dont even know where to begin with all this information but just to get some info

i wantd to know what was or is Gh and Kh,hardness and if so what is hardness and so plants grow good in it?

We ask this as it helps with co2, it could cause ph swings and it can be measured as ph, kh & gh are related, look at the co2 table in my sig. some plants prefer diffferent hardnesses but it doesn't matter to much.

Gh - general hardness
kh - carbonate hardness/tempory hardness
ph - alkalinity/ acidity of water

GH is all the dissolved minerals in the water, salt, calcium, magnesium, etc.
KH is the dissolved carbonates and bicarbonates in the water.

KH & GH are used to help stablise the pH and prevent it dropping rapidly. If you add carbon dioxide (CO2) to a planted tank, the the PH can drop rapidly. If you have lots of KH then it will help neutralise the acidic CO2 and prevent the PH from dropping.

Most plants will grow in hard or soft water it doesn't really matter too much to them.
