I expect this topic has come up lots of time, but is there anyway of getting rid of snails altogether. Is there a treatment that kills them all?

The only treatment i have found just stuns the snails to make them easier to remove but I have so many couldn't possibly catch them all.

Seem to spend my whole time trying to get as many as I can and im getting a bit bored of it now :-(

Clown loaches do an excellent job, providing you have the tank size.

I have the same problem as you and dont want to use chemicals, I tend to just pick them out and scrub rocks/ filter etc which seems to kill many eggs.

Im going to watch this thread however for any good ideas as i cant get rid of them either!

Zebra loaches do a great job aswell. had tons of snails when I first started but within a week of getting to Zebras they've all gone :)

hurrah :)

Oh right thanks, sounds like a good solution :)

Only problem is i've read they have to have soft substrate (or is that just what they prefer)

hey!

assassin snails?

dwarf puffers?

loaches?

good luck!

Any botia species should eat snails, dwarf chain loaches are the smallest at 2", but there are also many others including Kubotai, Lohachata, Striata and of course macracantha (clown loach).

You can also try the lettuce leaf technique:
simply weigh down a lettuce leaf in the tank just before you turn out the lights for the night, next morning remove the leaf which should hopefully be covered in snails. Repeat this process until the majority have been removed.

This can also be done on a weekly basis, if you are simply wanting to keep numbers down.

As a last resort there is a treatment called king british snail killer, but whilst this will kill the snails it will leave you with a multitude of dead snails to remove from the tank.

It's best to place the lettuce on a plate, then you also catch any that fall off and any that are still in the vacinity as well.

However, I use flubenol 15...it wipes snails right away and has no effect on fish at all, or none that I have ever heard of. I've used it several times with great success....however it's friggin difficult to get hold of. If you decide to go down that route then i may know someone who still has some in stock and I can pass you their details.

It was initially being sold by a fishkeeper that goes by the name of Paul Fox. That's his username and you can find him on many fish forums, although perhaps not this one...A google search brings up several results for flubenol 15, and some of those maybe worth persuing.
If that's a no go, then try phoning D&I Tropicals below, I aquired some from him a while ago and I know he bought a large batch so he may well still have some available:

If you still have lots of unwanted snails, I'd like them as I don't have any. What kind are they? Could you please try and trap them on a lettuce leaf as someone suggested - happy to collect from London or pay postage
Thanks
