Getting Rid Of Pathogens

I've been contemplating setting up another small tank...However, as I plan to have plants and cories, neither do well in salt.

I am feeling slightly paranoid about parasites and pathogens breeding in the tank and was wondering what's the best way to fight them off if I'm not using aquarium salt?

The amount of salt used as a tonic will not liklely fight of parasites anyway (though may create salt resistant strains).

Pathogens are not that much of a problem, just do water changes as and when necessary.
