Hi got a mate (not me honest), whose got a mature tank, been running couple of years. Says recently large catfish died and doest not wish to add more fish till nitrates have gone back down.

Whats the best way? He's reduced feeding, water changes be the answer or is there the equivelent of tank safe or similar which will reduce the level?

Thanks

Hi Tetra do a nitratenil to add to the tank ionce a week. Works for me

More frequent water changes, good gravel cleanings and reduce feedings is the best way to lower nitrates.

yeah high nitrates is a sign of poor maintenance.

regular 30% weekly water changes, good gravel vaccing, feeding less and sensible cleaning of the filter should do it.

EDI: should add that some areas have very high nitrates in the water which means they'll never get that low in the tank so it's always worth doing a nitrate test on your tap water as well.

JBL do a good product that you can put in a sump or inturnal filter called nitrex

to get the nitrates down do 25% water changes every other day for 1-2 weeks

i always have high nitrates 80 or more but its not harmful to fish so aslong as you do 1-2 water changes per week to fresh up the water it should be fine
