After much deliberation and research ( learnt my lesson with the bala sharks ) i've decided on platies for my 54liter tank. any platie variation recommendations :p

15 gallons... is it cycled?

If so, you could go with 3, if not, you could go with three, too, though I'd suggest fishless cycling first.

Do you plan on breeding? If so, you might want to invest in a rearing tank so the fry can grow to their full size (due to the fact that you'd be able to make sure they eat enough), or grow at all, since they might get eaten in the community tank. :p

As for types, any should be fine, since they all are generally the same size (though dwarves get to half the size or so).

The only thing to bear in mind is the sex ratio. Because livebearer males are completely focused on sex, they get a bit much for a single female to cope with. So you can either keep 1 male with 2 or 3 (or more) females, or a group of females only. You can also keep males only but then I would say it's best to have at least 5 to spread aggression out a bit (those hormones!). There is really no difference in attractiveness between the sexes: females are just as colourful. Even if you do get females only, they may be pregnant from the shop. Some females eat their offspring, others don't, but if you want to it should be possible to rear a few.
