I have upgraded recently to my new jewel 125 and it's really frustrating me that I have suddenly developed tiny little white specs like salt just flying around the tank and settling on things. It's aggravated by my bubbles and really frustrating me. Can anybody think what this might be? Fish seem all ok, it's just these specs. They wipe off things real easy but then of course float around looking an eyesore.
In the last year that my tank has been set up I have not seen anything like it. I even went out and bought a second internal filter to help, but as yet it's just hanging around. If the water is not too choppy these specs settle on everything, even the glass but then once disturbed and off they go!!!
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Do you run filter floss in your filter.

What are your water stats please in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
As white specs can be a sign of a bacterial bloom.

Also check the specs that they don't look like really tiny wiggly worms as this is normally planaria

Hi
Yes I have floss in my filter, A-0 N-0.25 N-20 ph I haven't tested for a while as it's stayed same for over a year which is about 7.
The specs look like salt grains not tiny worms

Filter floss in meant to remove fine particles from the water.
How often do you add new filter floss to your filter?
Just make sure there no tiny whites grain like spots on your fish.

I added new floss yesterday and am always adding floss....there is nothing on the fish at all....I'm tempted to take the plants out and rinse them all in tank water because that's where it settles....I'm at a loss....

Totally silly questions, is it a brand new juwel tank or second hand?. The older models (which I have) on the light bar and inside the tank are labels these degrade after a while, especially on the older models. As these labels degrade sometimes the bits of them go into the tank.

Also check and clean your filter powerhead.

hmmm not the same problem as I had then sorry.

Thanks for trying to help...hopefully it's something that will sort itself out....as long as my fish are ok then that's the main thing to me.

I can't think of anything else either.
Maybe copy and paste your thread over to tropical discussion. So more members can see
your post.

Hi,

Did this start when you added new filter floss? Possibly a silly question, but do you rinse new filter floss prior to placing it in the filter? I wonder if the floating debris you're seeing are small bits of filter floss that have made it into your water.

Just making sure did you say your nitrites were .25ppm?

Yes at the moment my nitrates are 0.25 due to the moving to the new tank I gather....I am keeping a close eye on this.

I always rinse the floss in tank water before I add it to the filter.

Today I was so sick of it, especially when I was sat on the floor and looking up into the tank that made me then see all these bits floating, but I can't scoop them up with floss in a net either!!

I have taken out the new box of (well rinsed) Cirax I purchased at the weekend so will see if this changes anything over the next couple of days in case it's particles from these coming away.

To those who were trying to help me solve my problem...I have solved it!!!

It was the newly added Cirax that I purchased...despite rinsing it well, it still continued to break up...I have email Juwel for advice but after removing it my tank is now lovely and clear. Happy !!!
