Hi guys, sorry if this has been asked before and if so pls post a link insted of explaining!

I have Guppieas and Platies both of which are pregnant.

I just wondered if anyone could tell me how long they are usually expecting for from when i first look and think 'oh i think they may be preggers' till they are about to give birth.

Thanks in advance.

Guppies have fry about every month. From the time you actually see them getting fatter and the gravid spot expanding....probably 2-3 weeks until birth. When they look ready to pop, and you can sort of see fry in the gravid spot...any day. :)

For Platies, they usually have them about every month too, sometimes they will take up to 6 weeks. I have more trouble telling when my Platies are pregnant, so usually when I can see that they are clearly pregnant is about 2 weeks in.

Thanks annastasia,

My guppy and my 2 platies started showing at the same time last week so this time next week all hell may have broken loose! What am i gonna do with all these fry??!! :D

Oh well they'll be loved!

Started showing fry? Yep, it should be pretty soon then! Usually Guppies give birth sooner after you can really see the fry then Platies do (At least in my experience), so you might have Guppy babies before Platy babies.

Are they going to be giving birth in the main tank, or do you have a seperate birthing tank or what?

I have a double birthing floating tank with drop through floor and i have a couple of spare mini tanks that used to home bettas.

I was gonna use a combination of these.

I'm gonna be a mommy! Again!

(this time tho it should be a lot less painful lol!)

I'd skip the traps if I were you. They can stress the fish out a lot, and cause birthing complications, abortion, and sometimes even death for the mother. I'd stick with the Mini tanks, if you can. :)

Oh crikey better go find the reciept - thanks loads anastasia.

Better get those mini tanks sorted out sharpish lol!

I would personally keep the birthing traps i have plenty of floating weed around the trap and have had no complications and have even seen the females give birth quicker without the stress of other fish :*)

as alwat what works for one aquarist does not always work for another

I used my birthing trap not for putting the female in, but the fry. Fished them out with the net after the birth and put them in before they all got eaten. Stuck a plant in there as well, seemed to work well.
