Hi all,

My LFS has some fish Labelled as "German Rams". They are yellow on top and blue colour below. I can't find anything on German Rams, but from research it seems as though they are German Blue Rams. Am I correct?

Also from research, they seem like great community fish, can someone confrim that they will be compatible with my current stock.

My girlfriend want to buy me some fish for Valentines Day  and saw these so wants to get these, but I told her not until I know they can work!

Some people say that they would work some say they wouldn't??

I have a mated pair in a comm tank with 3 dwarf goris and a betta amung others?

Do your fish have a peacful temprament?

Rams are mostly the same apart from where there bread and what colour, German blue Dutch gold so on and so forth.

i love them  i have 2 males and 2 females and they're great to watch!
thanks for the tip about valentines day... i know what to ask my boyfriend for now, more fishieeees :D

Your tank is basically full now. I wouldnt reccomend getting German Rams.
But you can fit 2 German Rams in there as long as they are both male or both female. If they become a breeding pair then they will become agressive. Make sure you have a lot of plants, as well as hiding spots. It is recommended that german Ram should be kept in a 20 gallon(US) so your tank is fine. However it does have a little to much fish which might be a problem depending on your fishies behaviour.

When mine spawn (witch it every 4-5 weeks) they do get a little aggressive but only to protect there spawning area

They don't go around 'beating' others up!!

Most of the other fish have learnt and stay away from that area all the time now anyway

Think the rams have taken the Alpher position in the hierarchy of the tank

Remember each fish has its own peronsality. Your German Rams might not be as agressive as other German Rams. And it also depends on the tank size and the number of fish in there. With the number of fish he has in there it might cause some trouble. The best thing to do would be to keep 2 females if he was getting the rams.

Thanks for your advice people. Especially you ManKind!

The current fish I have are fairly "chilled out" for want of better phrasing! Not at all aggressive to each other. The male Gourami can be a bit teritorial but the others just swim around [as they should!!]

I work on the principle of multiplying length by width, then dividing the answer by 13 to get the amount of inches of fish my tank can hold. Doing this works out to around 30 inches. This is based mainly on the oxygen content of the water for the fish to breathe.

I am aware that the "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule is used based on bioload, but as I have the standard Juwel filter and an UGF, coupled with the majority of my fih being low waste producers, I calculate that my tank is able to hold a few more fish.

The only issue could be room, but as all the fish are fairly small I think we should be fine.

Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, obviously don't want to put the fish under too much stress.

While we're on the subject, can anyone suggest a good UK online plant supplier, my LFS has a somewhat...limited...selection of plants, none of which are suitable for Rams

If you use the "inch per gallon" rule (since it can be used in this case) you have 13 fish in an 18 gallon. Now almost all your fish will grow to 1.5 inches and more. So lets just take all your fish are 1.5 inches and not anymore or less then you would have to have a 19.5 gallon. If you are not sure your tank is 18 gallons then measure your tank and tell us your lenth x width x height and me and many other people will be able to tell your how many gallons your tank is. Therefore you can push your stocking just a little more and if your lucky your fish might not go through any stress. But remeber 2 female german blue rams, and because you will have to do water changes every 3-5 days to maintain that tank and keep the fish happy. You might want to add amazon plants since German Rams love amazon plants.
I cant really suggest any UK online plant suppliers because im not really in the UK. You can ask in the buy/sell section. I have seen that many people give their plants for free which is really generouis of them. Or you can just google it.
I hope it helps :)

If you're getting close to stocking limits, I wouldn't put rams in there. That's like, begging for a pain in the butt-rams are cichlids, and very territorial (at least in my tanks) - what's the fun of adding something that's gonna either be cowed in a corner because territories are already controlled, or fight for it and probably get ripped up-IF it doesn't die from an overcrowded tank in the first place?
