German Blue Rams In Higher Ph?

If I do change to sand it won't be for a long while. I just set this one up a couple of months ago. It's a very tall tank....I have to stand on a ladder to clean it and if I want to reach anything on the bottom I have to use tongs. I would have to rip the whole thing apart and my fish are being treated right now for ick. I don't want to stress them out any more than I have to right now. I've lost quite a few fish since I started my aquariums and I have to admit I'm getting a little discouraged. I'm really diligent with cleaning and caring for my fish and I get quite attached to the little fellas. So far my cories are doing well....no missing barbels despite the gravel. I've had some of them for quite some time in my other tank. The gravel is very smooth. Anyway, I guess I just don't want to mess with my tank any more than I have to right now. I'm going to skip the german rams even though I REALLY want them. Once my tank gets back to health I think I'll get some dwarf neon rainbows and some endlers if I can find some anywhere. Thanks guys!

IMO with you stocking and potential stocking I would change to sand and watch these natural behaviours first hand. It truly is a sight.
could not agree more. nobody realises how important it is to provide the right conditions for rams.

Originally had sand for 3 GBR's in a 90L tank before trf them to a 240L which had fine gravel, cant say I saw much of a difference in behaviour, maybe because it was such fine gravel they sifted thru it the same as the sand, which is clearly different to large boulder type gravel

my rams are in 7.6 80f/27c with sand substate, they love sifting through it

also with gravel you get a huge buildup of crap if its deep and with the rams being so fussy about water quality sand really is the only way to go

in my opinion of course
