Anyone know of a smaller species of Geophagus?

I had a Jurupari a while ago which grew too big for my old tank (Rekord 120) which was returned to the Lfs. I have now upgraded to a AquaOne Evo 120 (260l) and would like to add one to the new tank. I have searched the net, and here, and it seems they all grow to approx 10-12". Not sure adding a potential 12" specimen will overload the current stocking and cause problems.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Current Stocking

Aqua One Evo 120 (260L)
2 x Blue Acaras 1m 1f
2 x "Red" Rams 1m 1f
10 x Tiger Barbs
4 x Silver Tip Tetras (Soon to be rehomed, or become lunch  )
5 x Red Eye Tetras (Not sure about these)
1 x Bristlenose Plec
1 x Clown Plec
4 x Cory Julii
Overfilterd With:-
1 x Aquis 1200 External
1 x Eheim Pro 2224 External
1.5" Sand substrate

The "average" size of a Geophagus species ranges between 8-12" depending on the species and the sex. Looking at your stocking and your tank size (about 70 gallons for us westerners) I wouldn't add a Geo to your tank. They like to be in groups and with their large size, they require a fairly large tank for a group. Also, I used to keep an acara way back when I first started fish keeping and I thought it quite aggressive, which could be a problem, since you have a pair and the Geophagus species are a very placid type.

If you want to keep these fish, I advise housing them with their own kind and if you can't, housing them with equally peacuful fish. :good:

I also want to add that jurupari are not Geophagus. They belong to the Satanoperca genus, but do not differ much in the style of care.

Thanks for the advise :good: , but while this site was down for a few days I have returned the AGRESSIVE male Acara and picked up a couple of Geophagus (Red Hump) Steindachneri. I understand they max out at aruond 6".

The Female Acara is resonably placid, but will keep an eye on them.

I was going to suggest steindachneri or hondai, they are similar and only get to about 5inches.
Geophagus is the old name for the genus Satanoperca.

I didn't even think of the steindachneri. When I think Geophagus, I think the larger surinamensis varients.
