My tank is a little over 200 litres and 4 ft long. Currently, I have Danios, Black Neons and Pentazona Barbs as mid and top level swimmers. Although they are fish that do shoal , they seldom do. I was told that if I put a larger fish in there, they may see it as a threat and cause them to shoal better. Is this the case?

If it is, I want to give it a go as
A.> I want one large fish in there but one that will fit comfortable within the tank and is happy being alone.
B.> Obviously needs to be non-aggressive as I' do not want my tetras and Barbs eaten!

Any advice anyone?

Thanks.

that generally only works for a relatively short time, the smaller fish soon learn not to see the larger one as a threat and stop shoaling

 pesky little fish :D

Can anyone recommend a "Gentle Giant"? I am thinking of an Angel Fish but not Gouramis (sp.?) as I am not fond of them

Angelfish would only work if you get them very small. If you add an adult, your fish would be dinner. :(

the neons and angels probably wouldn't work once the angels have matured.

why wouldn't you want to try a gourami?

hmmmm .... I had a really beatiful Angel once with Cardinals and that was a very peaceful set-up. The Angel was bought in small.

Gouramis, I have tried to keep them in the past on 2 occasions. First time, they got a really nasty diesease (Fish TB if I remember rightly). Second time, they died (for whatever reason) after a few weeks. I have also witnessed really boisterous and aggressive examples as well.

On both occasions, they were in the tank with more delicate species that did just fine.

Thanks.

What about a pleco? It lives on the bottom and does well by itself. Your tank should be big enough. Depends if you want a catfish or not

were they the dwarf gouramis? i haven't kept them personally because of all the nightmare experiences i've heard others go through with them. i have miss w's opaline gouramis here though and they're absolutely stunning and leave the smaller fish alone - they've been incredibly healthy and hardy here. i have angels as well and like them both equally, but the gouramis have been easier, because the angels are more prone to illness in my experience. :good:

glad to hear they're still doing well Kathy, I kept meaning to ask you and forgetting

I've alwasy found gourami's (except dwarf's) to be incredibly hardy too so I can't understand why you've had problems unless they were dwarf's

i was just mourning Ian's planted tank, it was fairly low tech at that point and IMO looked stunning in our living room. then he went high tech but didn't have time to keep up with it properly, can barely see through the algae on the glass nowadays, so sad :-( fish are all fine but it doesn't look too pretty!
