Some of you may have read my thread at the weekend about having sudden Ammonia in my tap water leading to a reading in my tank (had just done a water change).

At the time, one of my GBRs started displaying symptoms of what I thought was Ammonia poisoning - breathing very fast, darkening of colour.

The thing is, here we are 4 days later, my tank problem was quickly resolved and all water stats are back to normal but she is still looking the same, if not a little worse. She also hasn't eaten that I've seen.

Is it possible that she's still suffering the effects of Ammonia poisoning even though there is no longer any present? What can I do about it if she is?

Or is it possible that the stress of the weekend has caused something else, maybe an internal bacterial infection?

It's probably worth mentioning that I have had my GBRs about 3 months now and up until this weekend they have both been fine (I know they're sensitive). My other GBR still seems to be very healthy as do all my other fish.

Well, I just came home to find her lying on her side gasping for air. I went downstairs to locate something to scoop her out into (to euthanise) and she was dead by the time I got back.

Really I'm just posting to register my disgust. This is something that has bothered me many times before but now I'm going to say it - 37 people have read this thread. 37 people with apparently no thoughts, no opinions, no ideas whatsoever. What rubbish! I realise that this was a difficult one to call but even if the only help you can offer is "look it's a GBR that obviously has bad Ammonia poisoning - I'd probably euthanise if it was me because she won't live anyway" it is STILL always worth posting. Any ideas you might have are usually gratefully recieved by the poster as I know virtually all of you very well know because you've been there too.

I wouldn't mind but I ALWAYS try to help people. If I see a thread with no replies and I have a bit of time on my hands, I will always try to help. A lot of the time my advice might not be all that helpful but at least I try. I care about ALL fish, not just my own. Shame not everyone is the same.

Rant over. But if I can make even one of you "read but not bother posting" sorts think and be more considerate then it's worth it. :(

This has happened to me a few times. Yes it feels kind of bad. On one of my recent threads I've got some amount of views and only 3 of 13 or 14 posts are from others. I'm sorry about your GBR.

Thanks. She's in the big GBR tank in the sky with perfect water now! :)

I like to think that all the fish I've killed (sadly a few too many ) ;-( are all hanging out up there together in pristine conditions where there is no diseases and unlimited space. I hope that's where they are and who knows maybe they are all together.... :rip: :-(

It's just kinda what happens on public forums. I have plenty threads out there with nearly hundreds of views and no responses. And when it's somewhere like the Emergency forums, I'd rather not make a call on something or post something when we might be wrong. What if somebody says "Go ahead and euthanize it, it's not going to live" and then you follow that advice, and 2 minutes after you kill the fish, somebody else goes "WAIT, NO, YOU CAN DO THIS INSTEAD"

We're not trying to be inconsiderate, but I'd rather have somebody who knows what to say do something than somebody who doesn't. Emergency forums really aren't the place for bad advice or small talk. If I have no idea how to reply to something, I'm simply not going to take a lucky guess and hope that I didn't just put a death sentence on somebody else's pet.

Sorry to hear about your fish and I totally agree with your rant, i've seen it happen a lot of times in the two weeks or so i have been here, Not saying i havent received help because i have but just soemtimes it takes a long time and if a fish is in danger you dont always have that time .

I think it may be best to post emergencies in the view my tank thread its always busy there

Sometimes I've had to wing it for this reason and one of the three times I've done so it resulted in 2 fishies dead. The other two times I did the right thing just not what I wanted out of it either. This time I also winged it and it only was half good.
