okay...

been wondering this for a while now... when everybody says gallons are we talking mostly about US gallons or English?? ie. tank size...inch rule per gallon??

Confusing at times, isn't it? :p We need to find a standard and everyone use it. Unfortunately no one can agree on a standard.

Liters are too small though. 5 of them make 1 US gallon and 4 a UK gallon so we'd end up using 4-5 times the size numbers we do now. I suggest we just make up a new one.

i would think it would be easy if we all used litres but if we cant do that how about if we put uk or us after gals at least we would know which one was ment  just a thought but it might help

I vote for litres!

As should anyone in the UK who is young enough not to have been taught imperial measurements at school. I totally don't get them - litres make far more sense!

And whilst we're at it, can we use cm instead of inches? What's with this 12" in 1' thing anyways? Hundreds and thousands are much easier!

Sorry.....am I ranting...?

Hey I'm more than happy to go with litres - that's the only measurement I grew up with - well as in the metric system that is.....

but that's not what this question was about ;)

No, but kinda moved onto that I thought....

A forum-wide switch to litres woud result in a lot of confused Americans

I think people should state what measurements there going with at the time. Not everyone knows gallons or litres, I know more about gallons. so people should go with what there used to.

I always mean UK gallons, but then I'm from the UK. :dunno:

If the Americans can't remember how many fluid ounces are in a pint then that's there problem :p  Another problem with changing over to litres is that our American cousins can't spell it properly either :D

As for people growing up with litres in the UK. I learnt most of my measurements from my peers and cannot envisage metric amounts (litres, kilometres etc.) despite only being fed these at school. However once it gets small (less than an inch) I am terrible and have to resort to mili and micro meters :*)

Actually UK gallons are larger (circa 150 UK = circa 180 US)

so 1 UK gallon = 4.55 litres
1 US gallon = 3.79 litres
