Hi everyone,

I have a Fluval FX5 still in its box from a now abandoned 8ft project. I was wondering as it has a function to empty and refill the tank thus making water changes really simple, if it would be to much flow for cardinal tetras, opaline gourami, zebra loachs and a bristlenose pleco in a juwel Rio 180?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think so. I think it will be just perfect.

There's a couple of things you can do to make it more suitable for your Rio180...

Reduce the input and output taps by the same amount to reduce throughput.

Replace the standard double nossle output with a length of 22mm plumping pipe, drill as many holes as you feel appropriate into it and fit a "pushlock" to to the open end, thereby making a spraybar. I have the pipe and stopper in the garage to do this myself, as a step up from using a 22mm elbow to concentrate flow, but I will be trying to drill as few holes as practical because I still want to concentrate flow to some degree for my riverine fish.

Your Zebra Loaches and BN will love the current, if you have another means of creating surface ripples, you could place this spraybar mod down low and use a light powerhead to agitate the surface without blowing your Cardinals and Gourami about.

Great thanks for the advice guys.

That's a great idea will give that one a go.

If you go for a low level spray bar, there will be sufficient back pressure for you to create a small opening in the down pipe, just above the water level, creating surface ripple.

That's a great idea will try that before getting a little powerhead just to ripple the surface. Thanks.
