I've got some large-is moss balls that have started to lose their shape a bit, and get tufty. Should I start rolling them against something? Or can I trim them?

Anyone got any advice?

the best way is to roll them in your hand.
you can trim them, I've even opened one out and layed it on some mopani before. whatever you do it is very hard to kill.

Do those balls really help :dunno:

They are rather odd looking in a tank (in my opinioin).

yep, they use up nutrients (i.e. nitrates)...and quite a bit at that since they are very dense, there is a lot more plant matter there than appears

ahh interesting. Well my plants have started to take off in my one tank and growing like weeds (without CO2 even) so I'll give the ball a skip at the mo - though will keep in mind for future :)

one of the most useful situations for them, IMO, is in betta tanks ...where ammonia/nitrite are known to build up over time...moss balls can help to keep those conditions in check for longer

They're also good when you're cloning a tank - I always stick a couple of moss balls in a new tank. Lots of good bacteria (sounds like a Yakult advert!!!)

I read somewere that if you cut one ball in half (or even more pieces) it will turn into another ball within a few weeks without requiring to "roll" them or anything, maybe if you try that it will help

Are these those java moss balls that float you are talking bout?

Yeah, i find trimming promotes alot of new growth. Id say trim first, then when the new growth appears, then roll!
