bought some tetra betta flakes with bits of shrimp/krill mixed in - he eats the shrimp/krill bits but spits out the actual flakes! also feed bloodworm every 3 days or so. he had a bit of prawn the other day. is this diet ok? or any other particular foods i should try?

In my experience bettas never really go for flakes and I think a few other people have this problem too. They're so picky sometimes :p It may be that bettas tend to like 'meatier' foods than say, a tetra. They probably see the krill part as chips and the flake part as the chip packet - chuck it away. Otherwise his diet sounds fine, if he starts getting bloated cut back on the bloodworms. My bettas eat a mixture of Pro's Choice floating betta pellets, live bloodworms and goldfish crumbles that I am trying to use up :p They love the Pro's choice and it's the perfect size but I don't know if this is just an Aussie brand. I would recommend Hikari, HBH or Wardley betta pellets otherwise.

my betta loves blood worms and bits of prawn, never eats flakes, it's normal, blood worms and bits of prawn are a fine diet IMO, maybe try adding a few peas and carrots (mine likes them)

make sure you remove any bits of prawn that the fish doesnt eat tho, they rot quickly in my experience and create a mess

hmmm... so i gotta pick out the bits he likes from a big tub of flakes!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah right!!!!! errrrr..... ok i'll do it !!!

Perhaps he would do btter on pellets, i hae never had a betta refuse them even the wilds and they contain every thing they need

Flakes are garbage, they shouldn't even be sold. Flakes release nutrients as soon as they hit the water and they don't hold in the good stuff. Switch to high quality pellets and you will see the difference.

ok i shall try pellets, thanks for the tips!!!

hey......anyone wanna buy some tetra betta flakes by any chance???!!!???

Which pellets do you use Shelly ?

I feed my boys on frozen bloodworm, frozen daphnia and frozen tubifex. They also get live newly hatched brineshrimp.

Mine love the flakes, but only one of the two will eat the pellets

I have got a tub of Aqua One Betta Pellets "complete food for bettas" it is like dust, and not one of them will eat it! Think it will be going in the goldfish pond this summer...then I have got river shrimp, dried daphnia, flakes, pellets, frozen 2 different sorts! OMG I think I need a sort out!
