Hi guys

I'm new here, but not to fish keeping. I've had a tropical community tank for about 4 years. 180 litres in size. It is well established and cycled.

But I seem to be going round in circles at the moment and my husband has christened it the "tank of death".

I was down to only a few tetras and corries having had a virulent attack of fungus which was treated. The treatment seemed to finish off my plants as well - I don't know if that is standard.

Anyway I left the tetras and corries for about 2 weeks following treatment and they seemed fine. The treatment required two lots to get rid of the fungus and I even put it in for an extra week after it had cleared up to be on the safe side. So I introduced 8 danios - fine again.

Another 3 weeks down the line ie today I bought 4 bronze corries and 8 rasboras (all tiny). And 6 hours later they are practically all dead. ALL the new ones are dead, and even the danios are now covered in fungus. They had been clear for 3 weeks. Even the tetras which I've had for forever and survived the first outbreak and I thought were indestructible are on their way out.

I was convinced it had gone. Am I not leaving it long enough? Or is it something I'm missing. I am pretty sure it's not the fish shop we are using, it is a good one.

We put in new fine filters after treatment and cleaned the coarse filters in tank water. Can fungus stay in the tank? Why though is it not affecting the fish that are in and only getting hold when I introduce new ones?

Fed up with losing the poor fish which I hate, and not sure how to avoid this. Right at the moment it looks like I'm going to lose the lot, and am not willing to introduce any more fish. Which basically means the tank will be empty.

Help please!

Thanks

Is it flat white patches or marks, or raised and fuzzy looking? Any redness around thefungus? Flicking or rubbing on objects? Ammonia and nitrIte readings please. Any other symptoms ( hiding, not eating, bullying etc). A pic woukd be most helpful if you could manage.
all the best
cheers

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I have tried unsuccessfully to get a photo because the fish are so small - you can't see any detail that would help.

So: Ammonia is slightly up (0.25) but I suspect because so many fish have died overnight - will do a couple of buckets water change. I did a test before introducing the new fish and both were 0.

Nitrite is 0.

Marks were raised and fuzzy looking on the first bout and on both the body and the fins. This time it is more concentrated on the fins particularly the danios which have long fins. The tetras have rallied overnight and have no marks at all, but a bit pale looking. I actually went to fish one out lat night because it was on the bottom not moving, hding in the plants, however, as I went to catch it, it moved so I left it. It is still a bit lethargic this morning but better than yesterday and swimming. The danios are now hanging around the top of the water, not eating.

No flicking or rubbing on objects. No redness around the objects.

Thank you so much.
