Fungus On Eggs

Hi all,

I have been breeding discus now for about a year but over the last 3 or 4 weeks I have been plagued with fungus on the eggs. I have stripped tanks down cleaned and sterilized them. I use ro and HMA mix. TDS in breeding tanks is 60ppm and i do a 20% water change daily. I have tried meth blue but still to no avail. Running out of ideas now!! can anybody give me some advise?

Two things here mate. First I would recommend that after the eggs are laid you add Formalin at 1 drop/liter, and add the same amount during water changes to the water you are putting back in. The other thing is that if the eggs are not fertilized then these will fungus growth on them very quickly, and even formalin might not keep it at bay for more than about 40 hours. Don't add formalin after the eggs hatch. I am close friends with the owner of a Discus farm and this is what they do.

Thanks for the reply Phil. I know that the they are proven pairs as i have had wrigglers from them before. I have sent a photo of the fungus (under microscope of course) and I have been told it is saprolegnia and melichite green should keep it in check. So what I will do is put half of the tanks on the malichite green method and the other half on your method surley one way or another i will get rid of it using the two methods. Watch this space!!!!
