About 5 days ago I noticed that my betta had a kind of white fungus on his neck (area directly below the gills, towards the belly). I started treating with Aquari-sol, an American medicine for ick, closed fins, body fungus, velvet and other parasite infestations. However, the situation is not getting better, it is getting worse, with now discolouration starting on the sides of the fungus, and I noticed that he might have a small wound on his lip.

I have now started to treat with acriflavine. I wonder though whether I should change all the water first, and whether this is a good medicine for this problem.

Any help appreciated!

I too had this problem with my betta but he died right after I gave give him meds(I think I was too late!). My other tropical fish also are suffering from mouth fungus/fungus & fin and tail rot which I am treating with Acriflavine. This was posted by someone who had a similar problem:

"First you need to correct your water quality because fungus is usually a secondary ailment to stress brought on by poor water conditions. Test your water. If it is not 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and less than 20 ppm nitrates this could have contributed to your fish's illness and will continue to repeat until it's corrected.

If medicated quickly, fungus is easy to cure.
There are several fungal medications available. Most include drugs such as: acriflavine, neutroflavine, & copper sulfate. That being said any sick fish needs optimal water conditions for recovery and likely a 20% daily water change since anti-biotics rot in the water within 12 hours of application. .. I usually suggest an increased temp during treatment, like 82 F, and extra aeration but the aeration can irritate bettas who like low current. It's better to use an aquarium heater so that the temp can stay consistent.

I would also add some aquarium salt, 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons for stress. "

I hope this helps! Hopefully others will respond to your question and give you more info!

Thank you! I am doing regular water changes, and the water parameters are ok. I think it has to do iwth the water quality here. Temperature is currently at 29 degrees for the treatment.

I will do a large water change then and continue with the acriflavine.

Yesterday I gave the first dose of acriflavine, and I have had very good results with that, but unfortunately I found my betta worse this morning. His dorsal fins are diminishing, and also there a white patch is developing.

I went to my local lfs, and bought a tablet for ick, as some white spots occurred as well. The tablet is from the brand jungle, and is called ick clear, tank buddies. After a 50% water change I added half a tablet as the tank is only 12 litres. These tablets dissolve quickly and should eliminate and ick and white spot source in the water.

I also bought coppersulphate. I am hesitant to mix several medicines. Can somebody suggest me what to do? Should I continue with the acriflavine or change to the copper sulphate? Or should I try something else altogether?

If you suggest another medicine, please let me have the active ingredient as I am based in Mexico and the majority of the brands available in English speaking countries cannot be found here.

Thanks for all the help!

As your in the US I suggest tetracycline or maracyn one and 2, you might want to look up columnaris on the net and see if it looks like it could be that, sounds similar!

Thank you! Unfortunately I am not in the US, otherwise things would be much easier! My choice of medicines is very limited. I just gave the poor guy a salt bath to disinfect and medicating foods. This is supposed to be good for columnaris as well, so let's hope it works.

Tetracycline is a kind of antibiotics, right? What about if I get tetracycline tablets for humans, and try a low dosis? Or another type of antibiotics such as amoxyciline?

This morning I found Galan dead; something I had been expecting. As you can see from the picture, his dorsal fin is almost gone, and he is very red under his gills. Anyone can help me saying what it is and how I should have treated it?

The picture is not too clear as he was still in the water (water greenish because of the acriflavine). How can I disinfect my tank?

Just as a reminder, I treated him the following way:

5 days aquarisol (medicine against ich and velvet)
half a tablet against ich, 1 salt bath of half an hour after the sterilisation of the tank with the ich tablet
2 doses of acriflavine (in 3 days) after the aquarisol
1 day of medicated foods against bacterial infections

Thanks for your help!

Your betta looked just like mine except it was his bottom fin that rotted away. Honestly it happened so fast, one day he seemed ok and the next I noticed that most of his fin was gone. I wonder if the other fish were nipping at his fin BECAUSE he had finrot? I put my betta in a hospital tank, treated him with one dose of acriflavine and the next morning he was dead. It's obvious that you tried your hardest to give him comfort and help..that says a lot!

"Do not use soap or bleach on a fish tank under any circumstances. Soap and bleach is very difficult to remove from a tank and both will kill any fish instantly.

To sterilize a tank, fill it with hot water and leave it to sit for a couple of hours with a tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon. Then fill it with a mixture of one part vinegar to three parts water and leave it overnight. Finally, rinse it and put the tank out to dry for two days. The vinegar is an aqueous solution and should rinse out very easily; however, even if trace amounts remain behind, they are not harmful to your fish and at most will decrease the pH very, very slightly.

If you have already put soap and bleach into the tank, you should rinse as thoroughly as you can and then perform the procedure I described above.

However, the procedure I described should only be used when you are sterilizing a tank that was used to keep a sick fish or a fish that eventually died of a sickness. You do not need to clean your tank this way on regular water changes. Plain water and scrubbing with a sponge will do fine for those."

Umm...I don't know who told you to go there but DON'T!!!

Her info is moslty wrong, and besides overcharging for substandard fish she doesn't even breed herself OR take individual pictures of, she even charges for information if you call her. Bogus IMO.

You'd be better off going to BettaBreeders to get answers. You can sign up and get lots of info, or just look around and read the tons of info that's there.
