I thought my 2 blue platies were pregnant and the only culprit for a dad is my Red hi-fin swordtail, randy guy :)

I read somewhere to just leave them and hope that some fry survive and I have.

I knew they were kinda due but......

Yesterday while I was cleaing the tank a fry poped up from the subtrate hung around for a few seconds then shot back beneath the subtrate :)

I have a biorb and the subtrate is biggish rocks that have lots of little gaps for the fry to hide. I also have a java fern which they could hide in.

I have looked for more but cannot see any.

the fry was about 1/2 cm big.

A few questions if people could be so kind to help.

1. How many days old would the likely be?

2. Should I hunt for more by distrubing the plants and gravel and remove them to another tank?

3. I have been and got some baby powder food and when I feed the bigger fish, put this in and hope it sinks to the bottom before any other fish get to eat it. Is this ok?

4. How often should I feed?

5. Do you think they will survive in my community tank?

6. How big do they need to be before they won't be eaten?

I would be happy with just 1 surviver for now until I get more tanks and bigger in teh hobby.

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Hi Paul, I gound two totally unexpected Platty fry last week and from what I have been advised:

If the fry is only about 0.5cm long it's likely just to be a day or so old. Mine were this big when I found them.

I would certainly be having a detailled look for the fry as if you can find them and put them in a net it'll save them from being eaten and make it easier to feed them.

I would def continue to feed just in case.

I used liquifry for my platty fry and it says to feed 2/4 times daily.

If the fry are not eaten and manage to get food for themselves then yes they will survive in a community tank.

They will be safe from being eaten as soon as they reach a big enough size so as not to be "bite size" for any of your other fish.

Good luck in finding the fry. ANy more Q's do not hesitate to ask! Hope this helps.

What sort of net do you mean? Is it the same net that would be used for lifting adult fish?

dude nice one, wish that happen to me :\, my 2 guppys just wont give birth, its bin 3 weeks now and i got them pregnant.. so anytime!!!

the net, u can buy breeding nets 2 keep the other fish from eating the fry! or just use a big catching net i gess lol

hth!

You can get fry/breeder nets quite sheaply from your lfs. They are like a cube frame covered in netting to seperate your fry from the bigger fish.
