in my large tank, there are mollies and platies. now, there are babies, and i dont know who they came from. they are rather big and i think they will survive, but im not sure if they are platies or mollies. is there an easy way to tell? the babies are orange and there are no orange fish in the tank, so their color doesnt help. they are spotted, and all the livebeares are spoted, so that doesnt help either. i try to look at them and compare, but all they look like right now is small fish......any ideas?

Look at the shape of your mollies and your platies. Which set of babies is closest to the body shape. If they're bright orange then they're probably platys because I've never seen bright orange mollies.

what colour are the males or did you buy them preggers?

im going to say they are mollies..... the male was black (he died :( ) and i have bright orange mollies in another tank actually......bought them all at the same time. they are so cute i really dont care what they are!! :p

thats it just enjoy the fry and in no time you'll know for sure. i have some fry right now that i thought were all guppy fry and then i noticed two of them are orange so now im thinking they might be platy fry. ill know for sure soon.

We had the opposite.....We bought some fish and in two days had babies...we weren't sure what they were......a few weeks later our molly had babies (know they were mollies because some of them were pure black like the females)....the mollies were much smaller than the first batch which we now know are platies....in this mix we also had 3 swordtail fry which are a bright orange and a longer body.
