hmmmm i just transferred all my new fry into a breeding box from the mesh net type because it needed cleaning, so while i was at it i thought i would take a closer look with the aquarium light over the breeding box and made a rather grime discoverery, looks like 1 has a herna? is this possible? the other one is a pointed tail guppy which looks un well.

I'm not sure if they are guppies now coz they are white and not yellow like they were when they were born.

I am soooo confused!!!!

i have:

1 tuxsedo platy
2 mickey blue mouse platies
1 calico platy
1 hybrant platy

4 female guppies

Some are yellow, some black (they died), some like a silvery white colour.

They are about 2 and half weeks old now.

For some reason the black ones always die, I think it is something to do with their genetic makeup, well that is to say for me I've never had a black one survive which is a shame because they are cool looking.

A hernea, what exactly does it look like? A kink in the back so it can't swim ? If so this is a malformed baby I'm afraid, sometimes you see ones like that in shops which have managed to struggle through life but chances are it will die, the other one with the pointed tailed also sounds like a deformed one. I have to say bigfish your guppy babies seem to have an awful lot of problems, did you get the adults from the same store?? Its definately interbreeding and genetic problems the only idea I could have is that you buy some females or males from a different source and mix them up, this should add some variety to the new genes which will hopefully be stronger and more resistant to these problems. Good luck!!

Totally agree with William - it'll take you at least 2 or 3 breedings/ generations of your own guppies before you can be sure you have no genetic defects.

I had the same problem when I first started breeding guppies - crap genetics in the fish - so I got guppies from 4 different shops - eventually the strong ones survived and bred.

PS - now my lfs can't get enough of my guppies because they have no genetic problems.

Do the LFS give you store credit or cash for your guppies? Just wondering, I've never bred them in huge numbers, how many tanks do you have, in particular for the growing of the young, how many do you produce on an average month? Just curious :)

Thanks william yeah i got them guppies from the same garden centre a few months ago. That 1 baby seems to be doing well and swimming as normal as the others out of 13 i only got 8 left, all the black ones died, the rest seem to be doing ok now but very slow growing im afraid and they took longer to go from liquid food to baby flake.

I'm hoping to have more luck with my platies now as they are out numbering the guppies, as i only have 2 males left and 5 females left. this disease problem im having is only affecting the males?

William i have notice that my babies are suffering from skin/flesh eating problem coz all the dead ones i have had have been under my microscope and spotted little leeches or slugy things attact to their tails.

I guess 13 aint lucky for me ay william?
