So i have had my fry tank set up, unfiltered for ages now and the fry are about 3 months old and some are still tiny lol! I skipped the liquid fry food as i wanted to try and raise them as naturally as possible and let them get on with eating the algae that had accumulated while they were eggs. I was doing water changes every 3 days when the ammonia rose above 0ppm and as they got bigger i gave them an algae wafer every 2 weeks as well as having their algae and by this time baby daphnia to eat. A week later the daphnia were all gone and i had some seriously fat fishies. One night i changed the gravel and everyhing right down to cleaning the plants of algae, of course i kept some of the algae in the spare tank while i washed and put some new gravel in (the old stuff was going mouldy despite my increased water changes to twice a day and my powerful aerator). This turned out to be a bad idea and when i tested the following day the ammonia levels were at 4.0ppm thankfully no fry were hurt and i immediately went back to 2 water changes a day for a week, then a water change every 2 days for a week after that. Thankfully i got a little sponge filter recently with some zeolite which i am using whilst i cycle the foam in my main tank. i tested before i put it in and it was at 0.50 ppm of ammonia with the nitrite being 0.25 ppm and the nitrate 25ppm thanks to the large number of plants. 2 hours after i put it in i tested again and the ammonia had gone down to inbetween 0.50 and 0.25ppm of ammonia. I tested just now (8 hours later) and the ammonia has gone down to just above zero. At what size though should i put in a proper powerfilter as this sponge one wont stay usefull for long ath the rate they're growing!

and also what power filter would be best as my other two are in my main tank currently
