so ive had my platy fry for a while now in a breeding net. they are ten days old < sig > and small at one cm each. now today i see one at the back who is at least three times their size in the main tank swimming happily. do you think my netted fry are small for their age? or maybe this fry is a survivor from another birth i must have missed . any help appreciated :good:

Maybe. Fry don't tend to grow as well in a net, and you'll need to take them out in a few days anyway. 2 weeks is the max for keeping fry in a net, otherwise you really start to risk stunting. :)

ok . its a really peaceful community so fingers crossed when i release them theyll have enough sense to hide in some of my bushier plants. the biggish one has no problems , and is swimming about happily

keeping fry in small tanks can stunt a guppys growth. Although you will loose a few when you put them into the main tank, you'd be supprised at how many are cleaver enough to hide thus the survival rate. Its going to be more than in the wild anyhow!

One reason for your other guppy growing at such a fast rate assuming it is the same batch is that ther may be an abundance of food in the main tank.

I had some guppys in a tank with mostly preditors as i had to get rid of my old tank. After getting a few close encounters, they soon learned to hide and pretty well! I only moved them back into another tank last week.

whoops i meant platy lol. Well spotted. Same principle. I only bred platys once but i grew them in a 4 gall plastic tank (which looked ugly It was a hexagon shape) and they grew a lot quicker than my neighbours who was using a plastic breeding trap. The platy i bread was from my neighbours tank too as he had rotten luck breeding them lol.

Another example, baby chinese algae eater (AKA chinese chain loach) in my fry tank which was about 1.5 " and another of exactly the same size in my main tank. When i sold all my fry i put the algae eater bac k in my main tank and in comparrason the small tanks algae eater was about 2" and the big one was about 4"

Have i made up for my dumb ass mistake :p i'm running out of scenarios here lol.
