The best way is to use a sponge filter if you have one. Otherwise, you take some old stockings, fit them around the intake and pierce a few small holes so that the filter still functions.
If you can't get a sponge filter you could try to make your filter fry proof by cutting screen, or netting, and using a rubber band on top to keep it on the filter intake. That way since it's stiff it won't get stuck or clog your filter.
