I am setting up a platy breeding tank, what is the best way to fry proof my filter?

I just want to keep them safe so that they don't get sucked up by the intake pipe.

The best way is to use a sponge filter if you have one. Otherwise, you take some old stockings, fit them around the intake and pierce a few small holes so that the filter still functions.

If you can't get a sponge filter you could try to make your filter fry proof by cutting screen, or netting, and using a rubber band on top to keep it on the filter intake.  That way since it's stiff it won't get stuck or clog your filter.

Use an AquaClear sponge- see top right in photo below. That is an AquaClear hang on with a piece of their filter foam cut to size.
