this is my first spawn and there are alot of fry on the bottom of the tank.
i noticed that they had hatched last night before bed time and now they're not trying to swim up to the surface as much. daddy is a ct and mommy was a vt (been told these may turn out ugly, im not very good with the genetic side of breeding yet :S)

can they last very long on the bottom of the tank?
daddy is very slow about getting them to the surface and refuses to build a bubble nest, not having much success on keeping them up on the surface either.
any one hav some ideas as to wats going on? or if there is anything i should b doing?

soon to b betta breeder ^^ (hopefully)

Ugh. This is why you do a lot of research first? And they're not going to turn out UGLY. They'll just be combtails and if its a large spawn you'll be contributing to bettas in a cup :) which I'm totally sure they'll be happy to be in. Is the tank aerated? How big is the tank? Did you MOVE anything? How high is the water level.

well i did do alot of research. but i guess not enough.
the tank is not being airated at the moment but there is a sponge filter in the tank.
there are java ferns and java moss a heater and thermometer and also a foam cup.
the tank is a 26L we had to lower the water lvl i little its at 4" from the bottom now we can't really make it any lower for we don't hav a submersible heater.
im probably going to hav to wait and see if i get any free swimming spawn and if i don't hav any i'll hav to start again. right?

Wait... he "refuses to build a bubble nest"? He should already have a bubble nest BEFORE you try to put them together. :/ You mean there isn't a bubble nest in the tank? Yup... the fry are gonna die.

how long does it take the male to build the bubble nest, just wondering... can they just build it in the middle of the water ?

they usually make the nests in the corners of the tanks to keep them stable. I use the bottom halves of styrofoam cups and float them in the water so the male can build the nest in there it is sturdy and the nest lasts a long time! I'm sorry BabyDragonz but if the babies don't get into a bubble nest and the dad doesn't go to pick them up when they fall... they are going to die. Although I wish you the best of luck always and I hope you have better luck the next time.

is it bad if the male keeps trying to make bubbles but they keep popping

because my fish does make it in the cup it keeps trying under the plants

floating plants are also great because it keeps the nest stable, it will pop if he doesn't keep tending to it.

Hey, why is everyone saying "Yeah theyll die, no nest youve got no chance" thats not right to say. if you could spur on the male by maybe giving him a 5 minute flaring match with a male in a tank next to him he may think. "hey, these are MY fry not YOURS im going to defend them." then he might put them up in a nest that he might build in competition or if any floating plants are there he may put them in there :) otherwise some of the fry may survive by just laying on the tank floor as long as its VERY clean
