Okay i am going to put a plant in the fry tank that has been in the main tank for a few months will this cycle my tank ?? or help ??? well if i put them in there it should only tank it about a few days to cycle with 15 fry in it right ??? (10 gal.) I don't know what type of filter it is, but it is the cheap one in the set-ups at wal-mart

Well it won't cycle the tank, but it won't do any harm either.

It is possible to cycle with plants, but you'd need a lot more than one, and it takes a loooong time.

You'd have more success with using some filter media and/or gravel from the main tank and/or doing a fishless cycle with ammonia drops.

Hi willywonka099

You've asked a very good question.

My answer would depend on they kind of fish you have and their size. Will the fry tank have gravel from the main tank, new gravel, or be bare bottomed?

:) Quickest way to set up a fry tank is:- half fill tank with water from the main aquarium.... remove one pint of water from main aquarium and rinse the filter material from the main aquarium in it.... wash the filter material from the new fry tank in this water....wait for the dirt to settle out of the water and then carefully pour the clean water from the top into the fry tank.....add dechlorinated water ...add fry.

Fry need lots of water changes to thrive and grow... this means daily at the very least...if you can feed with lots of live food they will grow much quicker and the water will get less polluted :D

okay I think that is what I will do :) they are sailfin molly fry and mollies are very hardy ........ They will be fed alot of bbs and some luquifry small blood worms soon ....the fry are giagantic for 5 days old 1/4 of an inch or more !!! But the quicker they grow up the better ...I will need room for my batch*Es of sword fry soon that for the advice .....but my main tank hasnt been cleaned in about 1-2 weeks should this be a problem ???? too much amonia ?? i guess not since the fry already live in it

my baby mollies were born a few weeks after setting up my tank, they are sailfins too. they survived a non-cycled tank and 3 lots of white spot :S how hardy can they get !! lol, my tank has 4 plants in it and it is a ten gal

Well i just got my ten gallon and a corner filter .... i am going to put about 8 gallons in it bout 5 from the main tank ... sound good ??? about a 20%/1gal. water change a day

sounds good to me... but ask the experts lol, my sailfin mollies were hardy so... hopefully yours should be ok.
Plants are good for tanks, live ones, I love them cos i cant stand plastic ones !! lol

Hi willywonka099 :)

You are definitely on the right track.

If you add a little gravel from the main tank too, you will be introducing beneficial bacteria which will start the cycling process. With daily water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrites down, the tank will soon cycle by itself without harming the fry.

Just keep it clean and keep doing water changes until the time comes when it is cycled. At that time these fish will be big enough to do just fine. If more fry are added at some point, however, it is best to continue the daily water changes. :D
