I found 2 fry in my tank today, probably mollies. The fish were already picking at them (the fry are not that small-maybe 1/4" almost, so they're probably a few days old I guess) and the others were probbably already eaten. Anyway I netted them into a baggie and was going to put them in my 10g with the rasboras but now that I see how cute they are  I want to make sure they don't get eaten. So my kids need to have lunch and then we're going to town to get a breeder net. How long will they be okay in the baggie? (It's floating in my 10g so it won't get cold). HURRY!! thanks!

Try and get a platic breeder you hang inside the tank that will be better for them, good luck.

well we're leaving for town now-it'll take a little over an hour before we get back. I hope they survive in the baggie that long.

I'll have to see what the lfs has-it's pretty sparse. I've never shopped for any breeder stuff before so I don't even know what's out there.

Just got back. They had a plastic one that converted to 5 different configurations. So far it seems to be working ok. In my big hurry I forgot to see if the lfs had fry food so I'm feeding them ground up flake food for now and I put a little plantlet that was floating around my tank in there.

congrats on the babies!!

they will do fine with ground flake. feed them at least twice a day and not too much. :)

Powdered flake will be fine. I put some in a ziplock baggy and crush it with a hammer. It comes out really fine that way. You can crush it with your fingers to but I don't think it comes out as nicely that way. You can also give them frozen baby brine shrimp and when a little bit bigger give them frozen bloodworms. If you don't want to bother with frozen you can raise them entirely on the flake but I think a varied diet is better. I think they grow faster when you supplement the flake with the frozen foods.

Oh I never even thought about that-I have a brine shrimp hatchery! I will start a batch tonight and they should be hatched by tomorrow afternoon. I do have frozen bloodworms-maybe I can mash some up for them.

my guppy fry are fed tiny amounts of food 5x a day. They empty their stomachs within 20 mins of eating so little and often is the trick.

when i say little i do mean so small that it seems pointless..

if you can get liquifry they'll grow faster (it's liquid protein, a bit like baby milk)

my feeding pattern is as follows: (10Gallon tank, 8 guppy fry now 6 weeks old)

9am - 2 drops liquifry

12pm - tiny amount ground Tetramin pro Flake

3pm - Tiny amount Tetraprima ground pellets

6pm - 2 drops liquifry

9pm - tiny amount ground Tetramin pro Flake

(substitute baby brine shrimp for one of the feeds but dont over do it)

do that as well as 25% water change every week (seems to encourage growth spurt) and you will have done as much as possible.

i did have 40 fry at first. when i took them out of the breeder net i put them in my 10G after removing the danios, angel, swordtail and Boesmani Rainbows. i didn't remove the common pleco and my Shrimp.

i now know that pleco's or shrimp eat guppy fry, still not sure which though. i wont make that mistake again.

good luck with the babies :)

Thanks. I was going to suck out the old food with a turkey baster but my old turkey baster looks gross inside. I can't get to town to get a new one today because I'm deathly ill (ok I have a cold but I feel like complete crap) so I'm going to run the old one through the dishwasher and then rinse it again to make sure all the soap is off. I can't think of anything else to use to get the food out. In the meantime I'll only feed what fits on the end of a toothpick.

Thanks for the shrimp info. Since I have them in both of my tanks I'll keep a sharp eye out for more babies and I'll leave these in the breeder tank until they're at least a half inch long.

Well it might end up being survival of the fittest. One of the fry got in between the two floors of the breeding tank. It wasn't easy to get the one floor up to free him-I couldn't fit my fingers between the grids, couldn't take it out from above, so I had to hunt up a toothpick and push it from underneath. Then I netted him because he ended up in the main tank and put him back. If either of them do it again they'll have to try to make it in the tank with the other fish. I can't be checking on them every couple hours to make sure someone hasn't gotten caught again. Dang little brats.

The problem is, how do I feed them if they're in the main part of the tank?? If I put food in there the others will have it gone before the fry even know it's there. -_-

fry are incredible scavengers

I have a 50 gallon full of guppy fry. the older fry have eaten most of the smaller ones but i just feed the tank with whatever i want. The java moss cathes a lot of food and the smaller fry go there to feed on leftovers and tiny bits of food.

well one died. I was so sad I cried for I don't know how long (and I have a cold so it wasn't pretty). I normally don't get that emotional about fish but I was really looking forward to my kids seeing this little fish grow up. I still have the one and hopefully he'll make it. I went to the lfs and they lied-they don't have liquifry so I got hbh fry food and am feeding that with the crushed up flake food.

Thats a pretty good diet for the little guy :D....sorry to hear that you lost one....I had an accident with temperature once and it killed a few of mine...i was upset :(

I also use crushed tubifex worms...they really really like them....and it is cheap...i paid like $2.50 cnd for a small jar of cubes that can last them a long long time....this will also help to add some variety into their diet :D

Good luck...please keep us posted on how the little guy is doing :D
